Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings talks to a Florida man on a porch.

Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was born in Washington, DC. In 1928, Rawlings used a small inheritance to purchase a 72-acre orange grove and homestead in Cross Creek, Florida. She began writing and publishing stories about the tiny town and her neighbors.

Rawlings’ novel The Yearling won the Pulitzer Prize in 1939 and was adapted to film by MGM in 1946. The film was shot on location around Cross Creek, and the cast and crew visited Rawlings’ home.
