A still from the Vitagraph 1910 version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. A group of people attended a funeral.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1910)

Adapted from: Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852)

Two enslaved people are forcibly separated from their families when they are sold to a cruel neighbor.

Two film adaptations of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel were released in 1910: a one-reel short produced by Thanhauser, and a longer version released in three parts by Vitagraph. The Thanhauser film is lost, though descriptions, reviews, and two still images are available in film periodicals of the time. The three-reel Vitagraph version survives in part; it was re-released in 1927 at about half its original length.

A film still from the Thanhauser 1910 version of Uncle Tom's Cabin. A tableau of two women, two men, and a small girl, all looking up to the sky.

A still from the Thanhauser short film adaptation.
