Uncle Tom stands in front of his cabin

Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1914)

Adapted from: Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1852)

Two enslaved people are forcibly separated from their families when they are sold to a cruel neighbor.

This film marks the 7th of nine silent film adaptations of Stowe’s novel. According to Stephen Railton, it might be the first feature film to star a Black actor in a central role instead of a white actor in blackface.

Of the previous adaptations, two were released in 1903 (both filmed versions of traveling stage shows, of which one survives); two in 1910; and two in 1913 (both of these are lost).
